Is self-control the best way to fight temptation?

Is self-control the best way to fight temptation?
What you need to know about willpower: The psychological science ...
I would not say self-control, however self-awareness is certainly the best way to fight temptations.

What’s the issue with self-control?

Well, you are in a conflict with yourself. A mind in a conflict can never see things for what it is. The more you try to control something, the more you think about it, the more of a habit it becomes, finally you give into the temptation.

Now let’s dissect temptation. How do you get tempted for something?

It starts with senses, you see something, or you hear something, touch something. The senses lead to a perception of that of either pain or pleasure. The perception gives rise to previous memories. Memories gives rise to thoughts. Thoughts turn into actions.

What is self-awareness?

Self-awareness is knowing the person you are, not the person you want to become, neither the person you think you are. When you can watch your thoughts, desire without judging, prejudice, ignorance but with acceptance to see things as it is, to know your desires as it is. That’s when you attain self-awareness.

How will self awareness help?

With self-awareness you are no more in conflict. You understand yourself, you know yourself, now you are ready for true change. Without conflict you are in a better position to qualify whether the temptation is something you want to indulge in or its just a temptation and can be ignored.

Let’s talk more about pain and pleasure. These two emotions are two sides of the same coin. With pleasure comes pain. Once you experience something that gives you pleasure, let’s say going to a beach, writing on diary, you want the experience more. The cycle of senses and temptations start again.
